New Goal + Rant For Gambling

Well originally I planned to see what I could do with 500 dollars just playing limit hold'em but I'm going to change that now. If I feel like playing no limit, i'll do that, if I feel like playing some sit n go's or tournaments then I'm doing that as well! Everything within my bankroll of course.I've been playing some no limit recently...I was down over 300 dollars, now I've worked that to a $-130 and am still going strong. It's a pretty easy game actually, I'm not too fond of it though because I hate getting suck outs and losing a lot of money, whereas in limit it's hard to protect hands but you also don't lose as much...usually. Few more days and I'm out of school and playing poker hardcore!
I had a dream that I won a big 3 dollar tournament. Big money!! ^^

I've decided that this summer I want to make 10k. My friends told me they'll be making around 3k so I think tripling that would be a good goal. Why am I putting this high of a goal for someone who's only playing .50/1 NL and 2/4 and 3/6 hold'em? Because my friends keep saying "gambling is gambling," "poker isn't a real job." They couldn't be more wrong.

It's one thing to go into the casinos and toss the dice or hit up some blackjack to try to make a living, but poker is different from that. It's played among people instead of the house - this is something my parents for some reason keep forgetting. What you normally try to do in limit is enter the pot with the best hand, the hand that'll win more than 50% of the time. Granted, even if you have an 80% chance of winning, there's still that 20% where you'll lose. But to say - oh well see that makes it gambling, just like craps and blackjack! - is a horrible argument. Gambling means to take a risk, a chance, to gain an advantage or benefit. We do that all the time in life.

Let's take a look at something more socially accepted, the stock market. This is most DEFINITELy a game of chance. Yes, you can leave your money in the index with the top companies of the world and in any 20 year cycle it'll out perform all stocks - that is a difference. But look at respected investor Jim "Mad Money" Cramer. His advice is SPECULATION. Taking gambles/risks on companies that will either fail and go bankrupt or soar up a 1000%. So how is it that he's consistently making money? He risks approximately 10% of his entire portfolio or "bankroll". So what now? He sees his target, he does his research, at least one hour a week per company. Punches in the numbers, checks the background for any good or bad news, and if the price is right, he invests.

This is pretty much what you do at poker! You enter the room, sit down, gather data on all the players, pick your cards that you want to bet into the pot with (invest), and while the hand is in play, analyze whether you have the best hand (bet) or fold and cut your losses.

And just like the stock market, you can't just play the cards, you have to observe your environment. While investing in other companies, you have to keep in mind what interest rates are and what trends are coming and going. The FED Reserve controls the interest rates and as they raise them, certain companies actually MAKE money while others will go down, and the same vice versa. In fact, Cramer has it down so well that he has a chart of which types of companies to invest in while these interest rates are fluctuating. And yes, even though that system is pretty mechanical, there is always a chance that the opposite happens and instead you lose money...but that's why you never risk your entire bankroll.

There was a period in cramer's life where he lost $90 million out of the $250 million he was managing. That's a 36% loss! Let's say you were friends with Cramer. Would you say "that's why you don't invest. It's gambling! You can't make money gambling!" or "That's tough luck man. But don't worry, you'll make it back. Just work hard " Yeah, those are some words I'll never hear from my friends when it comes to poker, lol. Realize that Cramer wouldn't be looked down upon, he'd have some sympathy and TRUST that he'd make it all back (which he did by the way, averaging $1.2 million a day for the rest of the year). That respect and trust is something that I think most non-poker players will ever have for me. I pray to be wrong here.

Anyhow, do I need to continue? If the hold'em game you're sitting at is wild and there's lots of money in the pot, drawing hands go up in value - you can limp in relatively cheap, see the flop, and if its good and you hit your cards, get paid probably 10 fold.

Poker is not a game that can be limped in with all other forms of gambling. Only shortsighted, ill-knowledged people would say that. And why? Because they probably can't beat the game. My best friend looks down on me because I play poker, and of course he continues to play even though he's a losing player. "I just can't beat the game" "I always get sucked out on" blah blah blah. I've taken many more suckouts than he has yet I've made over $1000 so far in 60 hours or less because I play within my bankroll that can take these swings and I take calculated gambles that are +ev (EV stands for Expected Value - when we "invest" with knowledge that over the long run it'll make money, we call that a +ev move).

I find it funny that some of my friends tell me I should get a job for summer. So you're telling me I should drop poker, which I've so far made $25 an hour at, and pick up a 9-5 shift that pays 9 bucks or less per hour? I did that last year at PetSmart and I never want to do that again. I want to work my own hours and preferably 40 a week, but if I can't make all 40, at least I won't get fired. It's just too advantageous, there's so much freedom to playing this game. For the people who've told me that I need to drop poker and get a REAL job, I think they need to re-evaluate their own lives and for that matter, logic. There is no logic in taking a $-16 cut per hour. If I did that, logically (and this is why logic is so bad, you can manipulate it to your argument), I'd be losing $128 a day not playing poker! That's HORRIBLE!

I'm sorry non-believers but poker is going to be a part of my life, not my entire life because I have other lifetime projects I want to pursue, but this is something I want to sustain me for awhile, until I find better...much much better, where I will still live free according to my will. But for now, this is my job and yes it's a real job. I plan to work 8 hours a day, 40 a week if not more during the summer. I don't have a gambling problem. There are times when I play even though I don't have a huge enthusiastic desire to but I do anyways because I know I can win. I'm taking this with the utmost sincerity. I'm very serious about this game. It's a gamble that can have a big pay off, and if I'm wrong, then there'll be this blog so you can laugh at my face ^_^

But...

for now...

I will not be the dog of society.

Oooh a Sit n Go

No I didn't play any poker! My friend sent me a twoplustwo.com post where 6 good sngers (though I think one of them is pretty bad) analyze this guy's hand history. Pretty interesting.

Hand History

that's pretty much how I play Sit n Go's. Except I'm far more aggressive than this guy is by the time it gets 4 handed. Here's why: when blinds are 400/800, if you can steal them, you're getting 1.2k in chips. So if you do this 3 times and on the 4th time get called, you have to imagine that 1) your stack size + 3.6k must be pretty big 2) the guy who calls you most likely won't have a big stack, mb 4k at the most, and if he has less than 3.6k, well you still made profit, got it?

I thought it was nice of the pro SnGers to take time out of their day and comment. I really respect zeejustin's play (www.zeejustin.com)

Oh, I realized I said my next post would be about gambling and friends...ok so that'll be the next post :)

The Best Online Tournament Player...

I remember finding out about this guy several months ago in February. Back then I was doing my best to bust out profits playing Sit n Gos (10 man tournaments). Anyhow, soomeone on FullContactPoker.com posted about Darrell Dicken aka Gigabet. In this post I'm going to list several webaddresses to the articles he wrote on twoplustwo.com. I remember when i read his hand history, I was blown away. I felt like I did not know how to play poker at all. I really like his way of writing. It feels like he has a Zen approach to the game; very balanced and unemotional.

I want these links posted here so I can go back and re-read some of the stuff he's talked about. Always room for learning :)

I have not played poker this week nor will I until school's out. Sorry for the stoic post. I'm pretty tired right now and can't really think too well. I guess I'll take a nap :)

my next post will deal with my concern on gambling and the people around me.

Done With Poker

I'm done for awhile. Whewww, well I hope anyhow.

I finished the 75 dollar reload bonus at partypoker. I deposited 777 and cashed out 956 dollars. Not too bad. I still have 1k sitting at interpoker...waiting for those guys to send me my pin#. I'm getting a little nervous about that. Oh well.

So today I made $120 playing 2/4 limit at partypoker in like an hour or two. I come back after dinner to play some more to clear the bonus and I lost it all and then some! My broll was back to 750 bucks even w/the 75 dollar bonus added on. That was a huge downer. I really didn't want to quit down money, so what did I do? I decided I wanted to go back to my roots! I played four 22 dollar sit n go tournaments (10 man tourneys). I used to do this before playing limit. For awhile I was making money at it but then i lost it when I went on tilt =/ ANYHOW, I lost the 1st SnG because I slowplayed my top set and the guy got a straight w/a 3,6 =/ Then the next SnG, I placed 2nd, earning me 60 dollars (38 profit). The 3rd SnG I placed 1st (78 profit) and the last SnG I also got 1st! Boy was I happy :) Went from winning to losing back to winning again! Yayyy. Now that I finished these reload bonuses, I gotta take a break from poker and finish up my school work.

I don't think I'll be able to play much poker til late May. School gets out early May but I plan on visiting my home country so I gotta study the language again...blehhhh. Oh well, see you guys.

(btw, please read my post before this, I'm still contemplating on what to do w/my blog)

Free Dinner! and a little history

1st semester this year I promised myself to take some friends out for dinner once I hit the 1k mark. Well I just realized today that I went over that limit, so I treated a few of my friends to dinner. It was kind of funny because I knew 2 were coming, and then I realized my friend's roommate was coming too. Heh, I wasn't too eager to spend the extra 15 but hey, whatever, I'm happy to have made great profit playing poker you know? I'm now highly confident that I will not be working a minimum wage job for this summer. I'm a free man.

_____________________________________________________________________

I've been playing poker for about three years now. How I got into it? I have no idea really. I remember at film camp my roommate was watching the WPT and wanted to teach me how to play poker. I told that I had no interest in poker or any sort of gambling because it's a LOSING game. ohhhhhhh the irony =))

Probably a year after that, my friends and I had a homegame at Jared's house. I won that no limit tournament proving my geniousness...we were all new to the game, I just got lucky ^^ I don't think the blinds escalated at all, but it did last for like four hours. haha. Yeah, I really don't know how I won, and after that I always consistently placed first or second. I'm pretty sure the reason for that is I always tried to understand how my friends were playing, most importantly, could they bet big on a bluff? Or did it mean they were representing a strong hand?
___________________________________________________________________

I've grown up a lot from then. My parents would NOT be proud, haha. They don't know that I play poker now. I told my mom I play once in awhile but...yeah, they pretty much have no idea that I am a winning player.

oh yeah, made 30 bucks today, so that puts me at like 1822? I'm not going to take the 80 bucks from my broll yet. I plan on taking a small chunk out when I need to fatten my piggy bank.

Funny, I really like to spend money, but in this case, I'm trying to spend as little as possible until I hit 5/10 limit. And even then, I probably won't spend very much.

I want to write more but there isn't anything I really want to write about! It's also 4am...

gnight cyber land,
Michael Song

P.S. (I haven't written P.S. in sooooo long!!! When have you?!) comments are always welcome!

P.S.S. (YES!) My friend mentioned that I should share this with people from fullcontactpoker.com and other poker forums. The original intent of this blog is to document my adventure from 500 dollars to hopefully 5 million dollars =)) I don't like to brag and reach out to random people for attention. I share this with a very small amount of people for various reasons. If you guys think that I should just share this with the general public, then make your opinions known - as well as if you think i should keep it private!

I am an introvert to an extent. I don't like people being able to understand me. What's the point if you completely understand someone? It gets really boring, and frankly, I don't like people I don't know prying into my mind. But if this is just so FASCINATING or helpful, maybe I will be persuaded.

Yay I'm done!

I went broke =/

but not really (^_^)

So recap of today. I finished the pokerroom bonus but I still have to play more poker. I'll go into that in a sec. I started off down 60 dollars, and then i ended up 300 dollars! It was a struggle but I hit an upswing and played good poker. I made a few clever plays to earn a few extra bets here and there. Course I had a lot of questionnable hands, which I post @ fullcontactpoker.com

Posting there is my secret to improvement. i give my thoughts on what I did and based on their responses, I may ask more questions to further understand the concept. For instance, someone told me in limit hold'em that you raise not for information but for value. Since then I changed my viewpoint for the most part, I still sometimes triple bet the flop if I think he's weak.

I made another $141 from clearing the bonus. Tomorrow I put my money into partypoker - they have a bonus where u play 750 raked hands to get 75 dollars. I'll play some more 2/4 and see how things go over there. Then there's ultimate bet which is offering 25% up to 200 dollars. I don't think i'll play any poker there until the end of school.

So let's do some math. I had $389 in my neteller acct, I put in another 80 dollars from my bank acct so I could get 141 out of the 150 reload bonus (up to 15%) offered by pokerroom. I just withdrew 857 dollars from pokerroom, subtract the 80, and I have 777. 389 ---> 777 is approximately 100% increase :) yay! Add that onto my 1015 from awhile ago and i have 1792, enough to play 3/6. Pokertracker tells me I'm earning .48 bb for every 100 hands (that's like 2 dollars per 100 hands i see). I'm gonna play some more, I want that to be at least 2bb but if I hit a 2k bankroll, then I know i'm good for some 3/6 action.

how am I feeling? happy and accomplished...at least about poker ! Unfortunately I've got school to focus on =/

Idiot!

hahahha I just had to write about this
I keep some money in other accounts so I won't lose out on bonuses or points for being inactive for too long.

I'm having trouble sleeping so I decided to play some Sit n Go tournaments (10 man tournaments). I played a few 1 dollar ULTRA TURBO sit n go's on Ultimate Bet and towards the end, someone had gone all in, another guy called, and i raised all in w/44s. The guy said idiot and folded.

My move was bad for this reason: top 3 gets paid and there were 4 of us left. So it's better to increase the chance that this guy will lose.

Anyhow, later on I was involved in a hand w/the guy who called me an idiot. The board was something like 5 A K A J.
I bet the river w/a pair of 5s (another dumb move by the way) and he called me. I didn't see his hand but I'm assuming he called me with Q high. So I wrote LOL, IDIOT and the very next hand, i went all in w/k2, got called by AQ, and busted out of the tournament.

I thought it was really funny and really fitting. If only life on Earth was this just.

up!

And just like that I'm basically even/up again. I couldn't go to bed so I decided to play some limit hold'em while waiting for my roommate to wake up so we can go get breakfast.

In less than 1/2 an hour of playing 2/4 limit hold'em shorthanded (5ppl only), I made approximately 142 dollars! that's 35.5 big bets!

I'm really happy and excited. Part of the reason I couldn't go to bed was due to the fact that I had lost 140 dollars at a game that I was beating. I'm really hopeful. I really hope I can beat the 2/4 game and move up to 5/10 if not 10/20 limit hold'em by the end of summer. After I clear the pokerroom 150 bonus, I'm going to put poker ASIDE/ON HOLD until I have finished all my schoolwork or until school's done.

This game is incredibly time consuming but I'm in love with it because it could very well may be a big part of my future. If I had to choose between living my dreams or raising a family in a household that does not have to worry about any financial issues, I would choose the latter to give my kids a chance to reach their dreams. Thus, poker has a very high priority on my list.

Am I going to continue playing short handed limit hold'em if I've fared this well? For now, no. I'm going to have to post on fullcontactpoker.com and ask some people about it. To me it just seems that if I can make this much that quickly, the opposite can happen. I'll have to find out about the swings. BUT...I did enjoy playing short handed much more than 9 handed because there is so much action. You see more cards and are put in more difficult/tricky situations than you would normally have to deal with in a 9 handed game.

Example: K9 is a much better hand shorthanded than 9 handed. There are very few situations in which you would play a K9 in a 9 handed game - if you're in the blinds, on the dealer button w/no one else limped in, or if it's suited and u're feeling like gambling. In a short handed game, any Kx or Ax pair of cards goes up in value. You need to play aggressive to take down pots and blinds so you'll be seeing more situations in which the flop will be 5 9 J, or Q 10 5.
-In short, short handed (BAHAHA) poker puts your ability to the test.

I'm tired! Gonna try to stay awake for class and then come back and nap. See ya.
~Michael Song

Down!

down 30 big bets at 2/4 - 120 dollars.

My 2/4 game needs work, I gotta focus some more. I think I just play too LAG (loose aggressive) in general because every time I played the 1/2 game, I've crushed it. Umm, so I can't pull my 1k out of interpoker for a week since that's approximately how long it takes for them to get me my pin #. I'm pretty frustrated actually. I'm gonna give 2/4 another go tomorrow and if it goes bad then I'm gonna hit up the 1/2.

What I failed to explain is that I left 389 in my neteller acct so I put that into pokerroom since they are offering a temporary 30% bonus up to 150. So I'll clear that, then move on.

School's ending soon and I am SCREWED school wise. I gotta start catching up (^_^')

Ahhhhh Penn

I'm at U.Penn right now. This is my last day here (April 9, 2006). I've been here since Wednesday to 1) surprise my best friend's family - his sister is looking at schools 2) visit friends 3) Spring Fling - big weekend party 4) Movie Festival - this is the main reason why I'm here.

I'm really not much of a partier. I don't like the taste of hard liquor, but I really don't like beer and I can't get drunk off of beer so I'm in a predicament, meaning I'm pretty much stuck to mixed drinks and can't show off my 10 shot limit asian manliness :p

I'm really happy here. It's nice being with friends. I realized today that I do love one of my friends a lot, at least platonically. She happens to be first ex. We just get along really well and pretty much have a good understanding for each other. I'm really picky about my close friends. Few I can really talk to, the others (which are still pretty few) I just have fun with. Love you Tee.

Poker!
Yes yes, this is what the blog's purpose is, to document my poker adventure.
I'm up 200 bucks this week. I haven't been playing too much. Shifting money around online takes awhile and actually I'm pretty damn pissed off right now, but let's recap first.

I started bonus whoring at Interpoker.com because they give a monthly 100 dollar bonus, so that's an extra 1200 dollars a year. Pretty worth it imo. Takes approximately 6 hours to clear if you're tabling at least 2/4 limit. I actually made 115 dollars playing poker and another 100 from the bonus.

Now, the negatory part:
I'm pissed off for two reasons. One being that I have to pay a one dollar fee for transferring funds. Um...what the hell??? You already take a % of my money from the tables, now I have to pay a dollar to WITHDRAW my money but not deposit? You gotta be kidding me, douchebags. I realize it's only 1 dollar and doesn't even compromise 1% of my bankroll. I'm pissed about the principal of the idea. NO OTHER SITE CHARGES A FEE TO WITHDRAW MONEY.
2) They require you to enter a PIN #. This # is not given over the internet or over the phone, meaning I have to wait for snail mail. I'm really not happy about that. Right now I want to say that I am never going to play here again but when weighing the benefits vs. the negatives, it's pretty obvious that NOT playing at interpoker would be a bad idea.

I'm still annoyed though. I'm really rusty w/poker. I'm making a few mistakes that I really shouldn't have AND I've been going on tilt. I don't go and blow 200 bucks right off the bat but I am finding myself to lose my temper, which is the biggest no-no in poker. Luckily I use that tilt image to my advantage and start playing tighter so that everyone else at the table loses money calling down w/Ace high. Hah bastards.

I don't think I can continue a regular poker schedule for this month. I really want to though. I have too much work to do. I'm pretty behind in my classes =/ I'm really I want to prove to my "best friend" that I am a winning player and he's a douche for not believing in me. I'll prove this by making money through poker instead of a regular job. And not only am I striving to make above minimum wage, but also to make more in less amount of hours.

I.E. minimum wage in CA is 6.50, so 40hrs per week = 260 dollars. I'd like to make at least 300 in 20 hours.

Current Bankroll: $1404.34

See you later, Space Cowboy!

Played a little omaha hi lo limit while watching my friend nick play some no limit. He told me a funny story/did.

I wake up saturday morning and look at my aim window and I see:
Nick: MIKE
aslkdfj;aldkfs
I'm so drunk
;asljkfd;dlas
fuck
i lost 100 dollars
i'm never playing poker again
lkas;jdf;klajlfd;as
at 4am est

and then he ims me that morning and first thing he says is: hahahhaha. I'm thinking oh great, he just lost his 200 dollar bankroll. To my surprise he says, I have 320 dollars!
LOL
After he lost that 100, he lost more and was down to his last 30 dollars. He then surged through and turned it into 320. So saturday I watched him lose 40 more and that was that.

I got drunk last night. Very very rare for me. I don't like to drink, which is a shame because I've got a 10 shot tolerance worth bragging about (for a 5'4 asian, yeah). I'm pretty ridiculous drunk. I'm very loud and obnoxious concerning topics I talk about ;) I'll leave that to your imagination. I did throw up last night, but in my own bathroom not in public thank you.

That's it for now. Gonna hit up interplay poker and possibly pokerfantasy.com I want a free psp =/ I'm then gonnna work on the free ipod nano offer when i get home.
